Images from Germany, May, 2002

Some of my ancestors come from the area in and around Berlin. Now that the east has opened (okay.. so it's been a decade), my Dad and I went there to see what it looks like. I also wanted to get a sense of what his childhood playgrounds were like. The more interesting scenic photos are on the site, and the links via the "scenic icon" () are active, though the full-fledged scenic set is not yet posted.

The pairs are all 370 pixels per frame (740 for the pair), and the anaglyphs are all large, on the order of 700x1000. Click the thumbnail for the pair, or the anaglyph glasses icon for the anaglyph version. Either way, hover the mouse over what you want to click, and it'll show you the file size.

123kb 314kb A relief in the wall of the Kreuzgang. Its primitive style impressed me with a feeling of its antiquity, dating from the 13th century. 78kb 176kb The Mainz Cathederal.
94kb 200kb Mainz Stadttheater (city theater), where my grandfather sang opera in the early 1920s. 85kb 224kb  154kb The town of Bingen, seen from the Niederwald monument.

92kb 287kb The fountain at the hotel Waldhof just west of Herzberg, NW of Berlin. 63kb 220kb The cathederal in Prenzlau, NNE of Berlin.

61kb 128kb The Victory Column, in SW Berlin. The East German built TV tower is in the distance. 81kb 235kb The cathederal in Potsdam, SW of Berlin, seen from a tour boat. I used the motion of the boat to establish the base line for the stereo pair.
116kb 464kb  237kb While riding in friend Lembke's boat, this house presented itself as picturesque. I think it's the blue, glossy, tile roof. This is in Wernsdorf, SE of Berlin. 87kb 324kb The main (tourist) entrance to the German Reichstag (parliament building).
88kb 373kb The entrance on the opposite side of the building. 39kb 176kb This is Washington state, on the flight back. Not Germany, but it was on the trip. I'm fairly certain the prominent mountain is Mt. Baker, east of Bellingham. We're facing west.
